Direct Mail is Alive and Well: 5 Ways to Make Yours Better Than the Rest

Direct mail is not dead. In fact, it’s very much alive and well. If you’re not using direct mail campaigns to reach your audience, you are missing out on a tangible and personalized channel that puts your products directly into the hands of customers. Fortunately, it’s never too late to start reaping the benefits of direct mail. This cost-effective, targeted marketing channel allows for endless creativity – which we will show you now!

Here are five ways to make your brand stand out with a direct mail campaign.

Use oversized envelopes, and make them lumpy!

Let’s face it. Mail these days is pretty boring. For the majority of us, a stack of mail includes bills, credit card offers and home refinancing letters. Imagine a customer opening up their mailbox to an oversized envelope with a lumpy object inside. It will certainly pique their interest!

If you don’t have a physical item to send and instead want to offer a consultation or trial, still stick to sending something oversized. Large postcards, catalogs and letter-sized envelopes all have great response rates.

Send a 3D package with a promotional product.

People love receiving presents in the mail. Imagine being able to surprise your customers with a small box and a gift inside. Boxes almost always get opened, whereas letters are hit or miss.

Inside the box, send a promotional item that relates to your products and services. You will have the recipient’s attention, so be sure that your content is easy to skim over, your CTAs are big and bold and there are multiple ways to respond.

Reward new clients with a customer swag box.

Let’s say that you’ve just welcomed a new client on board and you want to thank them for their business. Rather than sending them a standard Welcome email or a pen with your company’s name on it, why not present them with a customer swag kit?

Put together a swag box that ties back to your brand. For example, if your company works with software and technology, a tech swag box with a car charger, battery pack and stylus pen works great.

Include a layer of interactivity with QR codes.

Adding interactivity to your direct mailing campaign makes your brand memorable. One of the best ways to do this is by adding a QR code. QR codes are great for downloadable coupons, personalized messages and other special promotions. Other interactive ideas include scratch-offs, textured designs, scratch-and-sniff scents, balloons and messages that can only be read under certain conditions (e.g., in the dark, under running water, etc.).

Send a personalized map to your location.

If you are a new business, or you are looking to increase foot traffic, send your customers a personalized map that shows them exactly where they need to go. Humans are visual creatures, and it’s much easier to visualize your location by seeing a map versus an address. To personalize the message, add the recipient’s location routed to your destination. It’s like looking at Google Maps but on a postcard!

We hope that these five ideas have inspired you experiment with direct mail. Remember to combine your direct mail initiatives with digital marketing for the best results!
